"The Gilded Age": Teaching American Industrialization through Local Resources

Sara Watson from Paris High School presented at the 2016 Annual MOCHE Conference.

Samuel Clemens, as Mark Twain, coined the term "Gilded Age" as a reference to the age of industrialization in America.  While using primary sources that reference Samuel Clemens' life story, as well as his writings, this session will integrate the plethora of information that can be found in the local area to illustrate the appropriateness of "Gilded" for the age.  Tips and techniques will be shared so any teacher can effectively use their own local resources to describe industrialization in America.  Specific resources shared will be from Monroe County Historical Society and the Monroe County Courthouse.
